Course Objectives

Explore how trauma and other factors influence child sexual development. Approach sexuality as more than behavior, and gain practical guidance for navigating sensitive clinical, ethical, and developmental concerns.

  • Describe key developmental, relational, and environmental factors—including trauma—that shape healthy and unhealthy sexual development in children and adolescents.

  • Analyze the ways childhood sexual trauma can influence a young person’s sense of identity, boundaries, emotional regulation, and emerging sexuality.

  • Articulate how sexuality is a multidimensional experience (e.g., identity, body awareness, relationships, values) rather than focusing solely on sexual behaviors.

  • Identify developmentally appropriate, trauma-responsive approaches to addressing issues surrounding sexuality when working with children and teens.
