Course Objectives

Demystify NSSI and learn concrete, trauma-informed tools to recognize, assess, and intervene with youth who engage in self-injury. Help develop alternate forms of emotional regulation and healthy behaviors.

  • Define non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and differentiate it from suicidal behaviors.

  • Describe the core functions and neurobiological reinforcing mechanisms underlying NSSI.

  • Utilize the SOARS assessment tool and identify indicators of elevated suicide risk.

  • Implement intensity-matched strategies including DBT and EMDR-informed approaches to regulate emotions and reduce NSSI urges.

  • Increase collaboration with caregivers to maintain hope, reduce shame, and support non-linear recovery.
