Course Objectives

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers powerful tools to help clients break free from rumination, rigid thinking, and self-critical loops. Learn practical strategies for untangling unhelpful thought patterns, building psychological flexibility, and enhancing self-compassion.

  • Identify the 6 treatment components known as the ACT hexaflex.

  • Describe the current state of research evidence for ACT as a treatment for specific presenting concerns and populations.

  • Deliver 3 ACT metaphors commonly used for psychoeducation and intervention.

  • Conduct values clarification exercises with clients.

  • Lead clients in mindfulness and defusion exercises.

About the Presenter

Adela Scharff, Ph.D.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Adela Scharff, PhD is a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania. She received her doctorate from the University at Albany, SUNY, clinical internship at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and a fellowship in Perinatal and Trauma Psychology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Scharff’s research and clinical areas of interest include treating trauma survivors, psychotherapy for marginalized and underserved populations including clients of color and transgender clients, and perinatal mental health. Dr. Scharff is a supervising psychologist at the Joseph J Peters Institute (JJPI) in Philadelphia.
